History of Marian Estates

A Legacy of Care

Our Story

Marian Estates’ journey began in the peaceful community of Sublimity, when Father Scherbring of St. Boniface established a home for the elderly and those in need of care. In the early years, the community grew gradually, guided by compassion and service.

A turning point came in the 1970s, when the Sisters of Servite sold the Marian Home—a modest 57-bed nursing facility—to Maurice Reece. For Reece, the connection was personal: his own stepfather had once been a resident there. Deeply impressed by the care his family had received and inspired by the Marian Home mission, he purchased the property in 1975 and dedicated himself to the long-term care profession.

Reece’s vision was simple but profound: always put residents and their needs first. He committed to building a community rooted in compassion, excellence, and personalized healthcare, while also ensuring its strength as a sustainable business.

Under his leadership, Marian Estates expanded into a 38-acre retirement community offering a full continuum of care—including Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Rehabilitation services.

Today, with roots firmly planted in our community and a legacy of heartfelt care, Marian Estates stands as a premier choice for retirement and continued care in the Willamette Valley.

Once met, never forgotten. Rest in Peace.  “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”  Luke 12:13

Throughout his life Reece was a dedicated educator, developer, nursing home administrator and business owner. His industrious vision and care for others made Marian Estates what it is today. Reece had a truly larger than life presence that made everyone around him feel special and cared for. His inspiring legacy, tremendous energy and love for life will carry on through the lives of all he has touched. His tremendous spirit is best pronounced in his life’s work at Marian Estates “where my best friends live.” He is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Jan L. Baldwin, who continues to privately and independently operate Marian Estates in his stead as the private, family-owned, complete retirement community Maurice always desired.
